Artists often seem to us finished products; they’re praised for the clarity of their artistic vision and for appearing “fully-formed”, as if either of those things occurred in some sort of vacuum; promotional cycles are meticulously curated, images carefully cultivated. But as the music of Sydney artist, producer and engineer Big Skeez shows, tracing the backstory is important. His journey, stretching back generations and running across continents to culminate in his art, is fundamental to where he is now. Though he may have started out with humble ambitions in mind, Big Skeez’s career has, to date, charted a very different trajectory, promptly outgrowing those modest beginnings. Independently releasing music since 2016, Skeez would go on to make his debut on The Area Movement (Hooligan Hefs, Hp Boyz, Jaecy) with his 2019 single ‘Madness’ before signing with NLV Records in early 2021. In between, years of consistent output, steady, patient creative toiling and collaborations with the likes of Korky Buchek, A.GIRL, FOURA and Swick have garnered support from triple j, triple j Unearthed, FBi Radio, Acclaim, Life Without Andy and more.
