Crystal Murray shares unapologetic “Like It Nasty” via Because (Shygirl, Logic1000)

June 23 2021

19-year-old Parisian Crystal Murray today shares “Like It Nasty” via Because Music (Shygirl, Logic1000, Christine & The Queens) following her recent explosive COLORS sessionListen/watch “Like it Nasty,” an utterly unapologetic blend of R&B 2.0, rap, French house, and neo soul, HERE

“Like It Nasty” is an unfiltered glimpse into Crystal’s current creative state: high energy, raw, intimate, expressive, provocative. Calling to mind early Kelis, the accompanying visual (directed by  XYZ)  is Crystal in her element: fashionable, formidable, confident and in touch with every last inch of her body as she navigates a laser-protected assault course and cat-walks down a security camera-filled corridor.

Raised in Paris by an African-American jazz saxophonist father and a Franca-Spanish mother who lived for music, Crystal grew up on tour listening to a rotating soundtrack of Sly & The Family Stone, Kelis, Macy Gray, John Coltrane, and more. By the age of 13, she’d gone viral as part of Gucci Gang– no, not the Hip Hop supergroup, a fashion-influencer foursome bringing a Gen Z perspective to the Parisian fashion space. Vogue, I-D, Vice, Dazed, and more, took notice of their vision, but the foursome was quickly motivated to give back to other young women and use their influence for good. The collective started ‘Safe Place,’ an online platform that helps gives voice to people who have suffered sexual abuse and harassment.

Crystal’s debut 2019 single “After Ten” marked her first foray into music, followed by “Princess,” which landed on a Bella Hadid-starring Dior Beauty advertisement, flinging Crystal into the limelight as a fresh new voice. Nostalgic and playful, crossing R&B and soul, Crystal’s debut 2020 EP, I WAS WRONG, was an ode to being a teenager and every changeable emotion that comes with it. Speaking on love, lust, parties, building expectations, and watching them come crashing down; Crystal’s lyricism is honest and raw, her sound energetic and soulful. “Boss” was the first release since her ‘Hotel Room Drama’ series, live sessions taped in apartments, hotels across Paris, Portugal representing Crystal’s personal universe and tapping artists she admires: watch “Good Girl Gone Bad ft. Dian” and “Creeps ft. Elheist.”

Now allowing herself to grow, change and adapt within her new music, Crystal’s new sound is one that fuses her knowledge and experience with her maturation. Exploring and understanding every inch of herself, Crystal has taken what she knows and thrown it into something new – she has twisted her bases. Flowing between neo-soul, jazz, funk, and house – Crystal’s energy is addictive, relentless. Her voice carries a maturity and weight while still breathing youth and freedom into each track.

Selling out her first headline Paris shows, performing with Aloe Blacc on TV, reaching millions of streams on Spotify alone, and garnering praise from the likes of Office Mag, COLORS, Clash Magazine, DIY MagBBC6Music, BBC 1XTRA’s Jamz Supernova, BBC Radio 1’s Jack Saunders, and more, Crystal has taken her career into her own hands, emerging as a truly unique and inimitable artist to watch.
