Saint Lane shares new single ‘Sugary Sweet’ and announces debut Sydney show following recent Baker Boy support

New-Zealand born, Gold Coast-based rapper Saint Lane today shares new single ‘Sugary Sweet’ which premiered on triple j’s Home & Hosed with Declan Byrne and Red Bull Music. Stream HERE and watch the lyric video NOW.

Of the track Muir says, “Sugary Sweet is about when my ex girlfriend cheated on me. At the time it was heartbreaking and I think when anybody gets cheated on the easiest thing to do is blame yourself and that’s exactly what I did. There’s so many “I don’t need no man” r&b tunes I realised there’s no equivalent for the fellas. This is taking the idea of “am I not good enough” and flipping it to “no I’m fine as hell. I’m sugary sweet and don’t need anybody”. It’s a song for people who have been taken advantage of and now they are saying no no no.”

Sugary Sweet’ was produced by Dennis Dowlutt (Peking DukFlight Facilities, Set Mo) and Danny Duke Perez (Noname, Jai Waetford) and includes the voice of Dennis’ 7 year old son Bastien “Bax”.

The release of the track follows Saint Lane’s early demo ‘Zip Code’ and debut single ‘Compliment My Shirt’ across the last two months. In this short span of time, Lane has gone to receive over 100k online streams, radio playlist additions from FBi Radio and triple j Unearthed. Live, Saint Lane has also supported Baker Boy across his Brisbane show last month, is set to play his debut Sydney show as part of Vivid’s Inner Westival event Heads Up on June 6 and plays Korea’s Ultra Music Festival later next month after a chance crossing of paths with the festival booker only weeks ago. Lane shares, “one of my crew by chance recently ran into the owner of Ultra Asia outside of their building. He was looking for a an office cleaner to have his place cleaned before returning to Seoul and somewhere between a bit of banter discovering that they were both involved in music, they played him some of my music and I was booked for the festival on the spot.

Saint Lane’s life on earth has been anything but a blessing. Born to Fijian and French parents on the streets of Auckland, Lane was raised in and out of cheap motels and homelessness. At the age of 17, his only form of normality – his family – would implode as his parents’ strained relationship collapsed. With no money, no car and a family in turmoil, Lane turned to dealing drugs in a last resort attempt to put food on the table.

Lane’s teenage years would be a dark time – he took inspiration from music, art and figures like Kanye West, Donald Glover, Basquiat and Christopher Nolan, to help construct his own sense of originality and drift his consciousness away from his troubled surroundings. He later turned to his own poetry, exploring the racial implications of a mixed family, senseless violence and surviving on the streets.

Sugary Sweet’ is out now, buy/stream it here.
